Ministry and Outreach

We are people of God, loved unconditionally by God.

We are called into a communion of life and love with Jesus Christ, who impels us to deepen our relationship with the MacKillop Catholic College community and with all people.

We are called by the Holy Spirit of God to use our gifts in the service of others and as stewards of creation.Picture4.jpg

We are inspired by the Charisms of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, Fr Julian Tenison Woods and Blessed Edmund Rice; we foster an identity and environment of care where all are assisted in growing into the fullness of life.

Chapel

St Joseph’s Chapel stands in the Reconciliation Garden in a peaceful corner of the College. Students are welcome at recess time to visit with friends and spend some quiet time here. The Chapel is an important space for guided meditation, community prayer and Year-Level Masses.

Prayer from St Joseph's Chapel is a regular broadcast from MacKillop Catholic College with Scripture Readings, reflections and music from staff and students.

St Vincent de Paul

The St Vincent de Paul Conference, or “Vinnies”, is well attended, and is inspired by the work of the Blessed Frederic Ozanam, who reached out to the poorest in Paris and founded a community of like-minded Catholics in 1833. The Vincentians witnessed their faith through service to those most in need.

Milo Mornings are run by Vinnies during the Winter Terms. Students organise and man a stall.

Christmas Hampers are created throughout Term 4 for families in need at Christmas time.

Our Winter Appeal focuses on collecting warm clothes and blankets for the homeless of Hobart.

Fundraising activities vary, from Fashion Parades to Winter Sleep-outs, cookie stalls and Milo mornings.

Our students are committed to helping those in need. Having an opportunity to minister in this way promotes empathy for others, an understanding of the poor and a real way to promote self-sufficiency in our community.

Edmund Rice Camps

As an Association Edmund Rice School, MacKillop Catholic College offers students the opportunity to get involved with the Edmund Rice Camps Network in Tasmania. Based on the charism of Blessed Edmund Rice, Camps provide young people with experiences they may not otherwise have. MacKillop students are mentored into leading a participant on a camp. The participants involved in our programs are aged between 8 – 15 years and come from a variety of backgrounds and locations around Tasmania. Each participant is paired with a young adult leader, promoting positive interaction, as well as the opportunity for the development of friendship and trust. Participants and leaders come away from our programs feeling motivated, having learned a little about themselves, about people and about life.

Timor Leste Immersion with Catholic Mission

Witness, transformation and contribution are the fundamental cornerstones of any Immersion experience. In the footsteps of the Australian Josephite Sisters, Year 10 MacKillop Catholic College students have been travelling to Timor for five years.   This opportunity has been extended to Years 10 - 12.

Catholic Mission leads the Immersion to remote communities where students immerse themselves in the life of the Timorese. Students teach in a primary school, meet students their own age in the SOLS schools and help minister to others within the Parish. MacKillop has a well-established relationship with Mary MacKillop International, and all fundraising goes to their Teacher Training Programs.

St Joseph’s Certificate

Inspired by St Joseph the Worker, father of Jesus, the St Joseph’s Certificate acknowledges and encourages students who are positive members of the community, who contribute to extra-curricular activities and who give of their time to others. Service is about the giving of oneself to something beyond oneself. It is all about choice - you can construct your own way of serving the community. In helping others, you grow in empathy. You are better able to understand the beliefs, motivations, fears and hopes of others. Opportunities may include Eddie Rice Camps, coaching/umpiring a sporting team, Jump Rope for Heart, Clean Up Australia Day, PCYC, Oxfam, Op Shops, Aussie Sport Leaders, Caritas and more.

Students can apply each year for a St Joseph’s Certificate, which will be awarded at the Celebration of Excellence at the end of Term 4.

Retreats

Education of the Spirit in the values of the Gospel is the primary purpose of annual Year-Level Retreats at MacKillop Catholic College. Taking time out to reflect on where you stand in relation to others and to God is a valuable and ongoing process. Retreats are structured to focus students on different aspects of their relational and spiritual selves and to inform and challenge them to follow the example that Jesus puts before us in our own lives.

Community Goals

Each Tutor Group sets an annual Community Goal. Exploring needs within our school and in our local communities, students get behind many different organisations in action for solidarity. Students learn about local organisations, and develop the skills of advocacy and working as a team to achieve a common end.
